Participants in the insurance fraud made false claims to insurance companies and used the money to buy extravagant homes, including an Orchard Lake mansion, investigators said.
State investigators Tuesday announced the arrest of a Bloomfield Hills man and the issuance of five more warrants for suspects in an insurance fraud ring that authorities say bilked millions of dollars from insurance companies in illegal claims.
Authorities charged that the ring falsified reports of air bag thefts and inflated reports of collision damage to collect more money in insurance claims.
"Any kind of insurance fraud you can think of, they did," said state attorney general spokesman Matt Frendewey. "They would claim a new air bag was needed when it wasn't, and charge the insurance company. They would replace an air bag with another old air bag and not hook it up properly. That is just one example."
Investigators also announced Tuesday that they arrested Fred Binno, 32, of Bloomfield Hills on charges of conspiracy and insurance fraud related to the case.
"These people would do everything from make a car disappear to dupe people into thinking repairs were made. Doing that with air bags could be life-threatening," Young said.
On Monday, investigators arrested the organization's suspected kingpin, Norman Dehko, 35, of Orchard Lake; his mother, Latifa Dehko, 51, of West Bloomfi eld Township; and his brother, Dickow Dehko, 31, of West Bloomfi eld Township.
Both Latifa Dehko - who was arraigned on 19 felony charges including conspiracy, insurance fraud and running a criminal enterprise - and her son Dickow - who was arraigned on 34 charges of insurance fraud, conspiracy and one count of conducting criminal enterprise - were arrested at Latifa's home at 4128 Autumn Ridge in West Bloomfield Township. The Dehko family runs numerous auto body repair shops across the metro Detroit area.
