CASTALIA, Ohio - Authorities continue to investigate the cause of a fire that destroyed a maintenance building at a pallet business Wednesday night in Sandusky County's Townsend Township.

The building at Reeds Supply Co., in the 2000 block of Northwest Road, also known as Sandusky County Road 312, was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived, Townsend Fire Chief Joe Parkhurst said.

The blaze, which started about 8:30 p.m., is believed to have begun in the center of the building. Nobody was inside at the time and no equipment was being used. The fire has been ruled accidental, the chief said.

The business owner, Joe Reed, did not have fire insurance on the property, and the chief estimates damage in excess of $35,000. The building was a total loss and there was a forklift and several other pieces of equipment inside, Chief Parkhurst said.

By knocking down the building's metal walls, firefighters were able to keep the flames from reaching nearby stacks of wooden pallets, which the company manufactures, the chief said.
