USA – Insurance company expands auto coverage for pets.
Insurance company Erie will now offer pet insurance coverage together with personal auto policies at no additional charge. Until recently, Erie Insurance paid only for first aid to others' pets in the event of a car accident. A company spokesperson confirmed that new policies will also include coverage for the policyholder's own pets too. He also says that change is due to statistics that say that more than half of households in the country include a cat or dog. Virginia will be the first state in which Erie will apply this new coverage. The company's new pet injury coverage will provide protection for domestic cats and dogs which are injured or killed in car accidents. Protecting up to two cats or dogs, the policyholder may receive more than $500 for injured animal. In the case of death of the animal due to consequences from the accident, policyholders will also have the option to be paid for the purchase of another animal from a similar breed. Such purchase costs covered by the plan will include the costs of up $500 per animal referring to the first wellness visit and charges to spaying or neutering.
